A Commitment to Addressing Homelessness in Connecticut

On Friday, July 19th, Pacific House was honored to welcome Congressman Jim Himes to our offices and shelter in Stamford, CT. This visit was a pivotal moment for our organization as we continue to address the pressing issue of homelessness in Fairfield County. We were grateful to have several key members of our team in attendance, including Carmen ColΓ³n, President & CEO; Silvia Narvaez, Chief Program Officer; Elsi Lyons, Chief Marketing Officer; Michelle Fanwick, Development Director; Lisa Planchard, Development Associate; Tiara Lofton, Director of Permanent Supportive Housing; Elizabeth King, Ancillary Program Manager and Robert Lockhart, Director of Shelter Services.

Meeting at the Pacific House Offices

The visit began at our offices, where we discussed various aspects of our operations and the challenges we face in our mission to end homelessness. Congressman Himes showed a keen interest in understanding the intricacies of our programs and the impact they have on the community. We shared detailed insights into our work with Liberation Programs, a crucial partnership that enables us to meet individuals directly at the train station, providing immediate outreach services. This collaboration has been instrumental in reducing homelessness in the area by connecting people with essential services right where they are.

Challenges and Successes in Homeless Outreach

During the meeting, our staff highlighted the critical importance of our outreach efforts and the partnerships we have established. Robert Lockhart discussed the ongoing challenges in getting individuals document-ready, which involves obtaining necessary identification and verifying disabilities for those eligible for supportive housing. This process is often complicated by mental health and substance abuse issues, making our holistic approach to support all the more essential.

Tour of the Shelter

Following the meeting, Congressman Himes was given a tour of our shelter. Elizabeth King guided the tour, showcasing the comprehensive services we offer to our clients. She explained how our intake process works and the measures we take to ensure that individuals are not under the misconception that they will automatically enter the shelter upon arrival. Our goal is to provide a dignified and respectful environment where clients can access necessary resources such as showers, laundry services, and meals, helping them to feel comfortable and supported.

Focus on Permanent Supportive Housing

Tiara Lofton shared insights into our Permanent Supportive Housing program, emphasizing the importance of these facilities in providing stability and long-term support for our clients. Despite the challenges posed by the high cost of rent and the lack of subsidies, our team remains committed to expanding these housing options. Congressman Himes was particularly interested in our new developments on Stillwater Avenue in Stamford, which represent significant progress in our efforts to provide affordable housing.

Addressing Legislative and Funding Needs

One of the key topics discussed was the need for increased funding and legislative support to sustain and expand our programs. Congressman Himes expressed his support for initiatives like making Section 8 a federal entitlement, a move that would significantly aid low-income individuals in securing affordable housing. The conversation underscored the critical need for government and community collaboration to address the root causes of homelessness effectively. Strong emphasis was placed on the need for an increase in funds making it possible for providers of services to the homeless to pay their staff adequate salaries to prevent them from falling into homelessness.

A Continued Partnership for Change

Congressman Himes's visit was a testament to his ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives that address homelessness in Connecticut. His eagerness to continue the conversation and his understanding of the complexities involved were deeply appreciated by our team. As we move forward, we are confident that with the support of dedicated leaders like Congressman Himes, we can make significant strides in our mission to end homelessness.

Pacific House remains steadfast in its commitment to providing safe, affordable housing and supportive services to those in need.

We look forward to continuing our work with community leaders, partners, and supporters to create lasting change and improve the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness in Fairfield County.
